ReOrbit reveals "Space Cloud"
Finnish space company ReOrbit today unveiled a very trend-sounding system called “Space Cloud.”
According to ReOrbit, the aim is to build Space Cloud into a multi-purpose satellite network that is “capable of moving and processing data securely in space.”
The company says the project is being developed in cooperation with Google Cloud, with the goal of creating a distributed, high-performance data centers network in space.
In the press release, Google Cloud’s Country Manager for Finland, Markus Hongisto, states that they are “pleased to collaborate with ReOrbit on the Space Cloud project,” adding that the project explores “interesting approach to orbital data processing.”
"This initiative allows us to share our technical expertise in cloud orchestration and AI to support ReOrbit as they build new ways to manage data securely,” continued Hongisto.
At the same time, the parent company Google has for some time been researching space-based data centers through its Project Suncatcher initiative, with the first satellites planned for launch in 2027. The project is examining the feasibility of moving AI computing and data processing into space, where solar energy could be utilized and some of the limitations already faced on Earth could be avoided. SpaceX and China are also actively developing space-based data centers.
Whether ReOrbit’s project is connected in any way to Project Suncatcher remains unclear.
